Baa Atoll is a breathtaking atoll in the central-western Maldives, renowned for its pristine islands, vibrant coral reefs, turquoise lagoons, and exceptional marine biodiversity. Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011, it is especially famous for Hanifaru Bay, where large gatherings of manta rays and occasional whale sharks can be seen.

Baa Atoll is located in the central-western region of the Maldives and is one of the country's most ecologically important and naturally beautiful atolls. It consists of numerous coral islands, reefs, lagoons, seagrass beds, and mangrove habitats surrounded by the clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Because of its remarkable biodiversity and unique marine ecosystems, Baa Atoll was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011.
The atoll is internationally known for Hanifaru Bay, a protected marine area where seasonal concentrations of plankton attract some of the world's largest gatherings of reef manta rays. Whale sharks can also occasionally be encountered in the area. The surrounding reefs support hundreds of coral species and a rich variety of marine life, including reef fish, sea turtles, sharks, rays, and seabirds.

Beyond its natural attractions, Baa Atoll includes inhabited local islands as well as luxury resort islands. Local communities have traditionally depended on fishing and other marine resources, while tourism has become an important part of the regional economy. Visitors can enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, manta-ray excursions, fishing, island visits, and relaxing on secluded tropical beaches.

With its combination of thriving coral reefs, abundant marine life, traditional island communities, and world-class resorts, Baa Atoll represents both the natural beauty and environmental importance of the Maldives. Its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status highlights ongoing efforts to balance conservation, tourism, and sustainable use of the atoll's valuable marine environment.
