Fuvahmulah City is a unique one-island atoll in the southern Maldives, famous for its lush tropical landscape, freshwater lakes, wetlands, distinctive beaches, and rich marine life. Unlike the typical coral islands of the Maldives, Fuvahmulah offers a remarkably diverse natural environment and is especially renowned for world-class diving and encounters with tiger sharks.

Fuvahmulah City is one of the most distinctive destinations in the Maldives. Located in the far south of the country, between Huvadhoo Atoll and Addu Atoll, Fuvahmulah is both a single-island atoll and a city. Its isolated location and unusual geography have created an environment unlike almost anywhere else in the Maldivian archipelago.
While most Maldivian islands are known primarily for white-sand beaches, lagoons, and coconut palms, Fuvahmulah features an exceptionally varied landscape. The island is remarkably green and fertile, with tropical vegetation, agricultural areas, wetlands, and two natural freshwater lakes—Bandaara Kilhi and Koda Kilhi. These lakes and their surrounding wetlands provide important habitats for birds and other wildlife.

One of Fuvahmulah's best-known natural attractions is Thoondu, a distinctive beach on the northern side of the island. Instead of ordinary coral sand, the beach is famous for its smooth, rounded white pebbles locally known as *bissaaveli*. Powerful ocean swells and the constantly changing shoreline give Thoondu a character very different from the calm lagoon beaches commonly associated with the Maldives.

Fuvahmulah has also developed an international reputation as an exceptional diving destination. The deep ocean surrounding the island attracts a remarkable variety of large marine species. It is particularly famous for encounters with tiger sharks, while divers may also have opportunities to see thresher sharks, whale sharks, manta rays, oceanic manta rays and other pelagic marine life depending on conditions and season.

Beyond its natural attractions, Fuvahmulah offers visitors an opportunity to experience authentic Maldivian island life. The city has its own strong local identity, traditions and dialect, shaped partly by centuries of geographical isolation. Visitors can explore neighborhoods, local cafés, farms and historical sites while experiencing a side of the Maldives that is very different from a private resort island.

With its freshwater lakes, wetlands, tropical greenery, unusual beaches, rich local culture and spectacular underwater encounters, Fuvahmulah City combines nature, adventure and community life in one destination. It is particularly suited to travelers looking beyond the traditional Maldives resort experience and seeking one of the country's most unusual and naturally diverse islands.
