Gaafu Alifu Atoll, also known as Northern Huvadhu Atoll, is a beautiful administrative atoll in the southern Maldives. Known for its large natural lagoon, unspoiled islands, rich coral reefs, and excellent diving and fishing areas, the atoll combines traditional Maldivian island life with luxury tourism. Its administrative capital is Villingili.

Gaafu Alifu Atoll is located in the southern part of the Maldives and forms the northern section of the vast Huvadhu Atoll, one of the largest natural atoll systems in the world. The administrative atoll is commonly abbreviated as GA and includes a collection of inhabited islands, resort islands, and numerous uninhabited islands surrounded by clear tropical waters.
The capital of Gaafu Alifu Atoll is Villingili, one of the main population and service centers in the region. Local communities throughout the atoll maintain strong connections with traditional Maldivian culture, fishing, seafaring, and island-based livelihoods. Modern services, education, transportation, tourism, and small businesses have also become increasingly important to the local economy.

Gaafu Alifu is especially well known for its marine environment. Its outer reefs, channels, lagoons, and deep ocean surroundings provide habitats for a wide variety of marine life. Divers and snorkelers can encounter colorful reef fish, sharks, rays, turtles, and other tropical species. The relatively remote location of the atoll has helped many areas retain a peaceful and natural character.

Tourism is an important part of the region, with several resorts taking advantage of the atoll's secluded beaches, tropical vegetation, coral reefs, and excellent diving conditions. Visitors can enjoy activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, dolphin watching, water sports, island excursions, and traditional Maldivian experiences.

The atoll's geography also makes it attractive for surfing and ocean adventures, while its channels and offshore waters are popular with experienced divers and fishermen. Many uninhabited islands and sandbanks add to the area's scenic beauty and provide opportunities for private excursions and picnics.

Because it lies far south of Malé, Gaafu Alifu offers a quieter and less densely developed atmosphere than many central Maldivian atolls. Its combination of large natural lagoons, healthy reefs, remote islands, local culture, and luxury resorts makes Gaafu Alifu Atoll one of the Maldives' distinctive southern destinations.
