Faafu Atoll, officially known as Nilandhe Atholhu Uthuruburi or Northern Nilandhe Atoll, is an administrative atoll located in the central region of the Maldives. It consists of 23 islands, with five inhabited islands: Nilandhoo, Bilehdhoo, Dharanboodhoo, Magoodhoo, and Feeali. Nilandhoo serves as the administrative capital and is the largest and most prominent community in the atoll.
The atoll is surrounded by turquoise lagoons, coral reefs, channels, and stretches of open Indian Ocean, creating excellent conditions for snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, and other marine activities. Its reefs support a diverse range of tropical marine life, while the relatively quiet nature of the region gives visitors an opportunity to experience a less crowded side of the Maldives.

Faafu Atoll also has an important place in Maldivian history. Nilandhoo contains notable archaeological and historic sites, reflecting settlements and cultural traditions that date back centuries. The island is particularly known for ancient remains as well as historic mosque architecture, making it one of the culturally significant islands in the region.

Life across the inhabited islands remains closely connected to the sea. Fishing, agriculture, construction, public-sector employment, and tourism have traditionally been important parts of the local economy. Communities maintain the relaxed atmosphere and close social connections characteristic of smaller Maldivian islands.

For travelers, Faafu Atoll combines natural beauty, underwater adventures, local culture, and historical interest. Visitors can explore colorful reefs, enjoy diving and snorkeling, experience traditional island communities, relax on tropical beaches, and discover a quieter part of the Maldives away from the country's busiest tourism centers. Its mixture of heritage and pristine marine surroundings makes Faafu Atoll an appealing destination for those looking to experience both the natural and cultural character of the Maldives.
