Addu City is the southernmost city of the Maldives, located in Addu Atoll near the Equator. Known for its lush tropical scenery, connected island communities, historic sites, beautiful lagoons, and rich marine life, Addu offers a distinctive side of the Maldives beyond the traditional resort experience. The city includes several inhabited islands connected by causeways and is an important regional center for tourism, fishing, business, education, and public services.

Addu City is a major urban and regional center in the southern Maldives, situated in Addu Atoll, close to the Equator. It is one of the country's most distinctive destinations, combining island communities, tropical vegetation, wetlands, beaches, coral reefs, historic landmarks, and a large natural lagoon.
Unlike many Maldivian atolls where inhabited islands are separated by sea, several islands of Addu are connected by causeways and roads. This creates one of the longest continuous road networks in the Maldives and allows residents and visitors to travel conveniently between different parts of the city by car, motorcycle, or bicycle.

The city includes the main inhabited areas of Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo. Hithadhoo is the largest population center and contains many government offices, schools, businesses, healthcare facilities, shops, and other important services.

Addu has an important place in Maldivian history. During the Second World War, the British established a military base in the atoll, and remnants of this period can still be found around the city. Later, Gan Island became an important Royal Air Force base. Today, Gan is home to Gan International Airport, providing air access to the southern region.

The natural environment is another major attraction. Addu is surrounded by clear tropical waters, coral reefs, dive sites, seagrass areas, and channels that support a wide variety of marine life. Divers and snorkelers can encounter colorful reef fish, turtles, rays, sharks, and other species. The atoll is also known for manta ray encounters and several internationally recognized dive sites.

Hithadhoo contains important wetlands and freshwater areas, including Eidhigali Kilhi and Koattey, which support birds, mangroves, tropical vegetation, and other wildlife. These environments make Addu especially interesting for nature tourism, cycling, photography, birdwatching, and eco-tourism.

The local economy includes tourism, fishing, retail businesses, transportation, construction, government services, education, and other small and medium-sized enterprises. Tourism continues to grow through resorts, guesthouses, diving centers, watersports businesses, restaurants, and locally operated excursions.

Addu City also offers visitors an opportunity to experience everyday Maldivian community life. Travelers can explore local neighborhoods, traditional food, mosques, beaches, cafés, fishing areas, historic locations, and quiet coastal roads while remaining close to modern services.

With its unique geography, connected islands, historical significance, natural wetlands, marine biodiversity, international airport, and strong local culture, Addu City is one of the most important and distinctive destinations in the southern Maldives.
