Take a Maldivian Cooking Class: Learn to Make Mas Huni, Fish Curry & Local Snacks

Discover the real taste of the Maldives by joining a traditional Maldivian cooking class. Learn how to prepare mas huni, aromatic fish curry, bajiya, and other local favorites while experiencing island culture through its food.

The Maldives may be famous for turquoise lagoons and white-sand beaches, but its cuisine is just as memorable. A Maldivian cooking class gives travelers the opportunity to step beyond the typical resort experience and discover how islanders transform simple ingredients such as tuna, coconut, chili, onion, and lime into flavorful dishes.

Whether you love cooking or simply want a more authentic cultural experience, learning to prepare Maldivian food can become one of the highlights of your trip.

Why Take a Cooking Class in the Maldives?

Food offers a fascinating window into Maldivian history and everyday island life. For generations, local cuisine has been shaped by the ingredients readily available across the islands, particularly fresh tuna and coconut.

During a cooking class, you can learn traditional preparation techniques while hearing about the dishes, ingredients, and customs associated with Maldivian meals.

During our last yoga retreat, we swapped yoga mats for wooden spoons and learned how to make traditional Maldivian roshi (flatbreads), fresh mashuni with tuna and coconut, and a quick curry with homemade coconut milk. 🥥🥘🥬 If you’ve stayed with us before and loved the Maldivian breakfast with tuna and coconut, here’s the recipe for you — don’t forget to save the video 🤍 Ingredients: • 1 can of tuna in oil • 1 cup freshly grated coconut • 1 lime • 1 red onion • 1 chili (optional) • salt, pepper Finely chop the red onion, add it to a bowl and season with salt. Mix well — ideally with your hands — to soften the onion. Add tuna, fresh coconut, chili (if using), pepper, and lime juice. Gently mash everything together until the texture is soft and even — there shouldn’t be any large tuna chunks left. Serve with roshi (Maldivian flatbread) or simply with a store-bought tortilla. All this (and more) awaits us again in February 2026 during our next yoga retreats! The 1–13 February group is already fully booked, but the 15–27 February retreat is still open — don’t wait too long to reserve your spot 🤍 #yoga #retreat #maldives #cookingclass #tropicalvibes

Unlike simply ordering local food at a restaurant, a hands-on class lets you prepare the dishes yourself—and gives you recipes and techniques you can try again after returning home.

Learn How to Make Mas Huni

One of the first dishes you may encounter is mas huni, a classic Maldivian breakfast.

Traditionally, mas huni combines shredded or finely chopped tuna with grated coconut, onion, chili, and lime. The ingredients are mixed together to create a fresh, slightly spicy dish packed with tropical flavor.

It is commonly eaten with roshi, a thin Maldivian flatbread, and served with hot tea.

Despite its simplicity, getting the balance between coconut, tuna, citrus, onion, and chili right is part of what makes learning the dish from a local cook so rewarding.

Discover the Secrets of Maldivian Fish Curry

Fish is central to Maldivian cuisine, and a traditional Maldivian fish curry is another dish worth learning.

Depending on the recipe, you may work with tuna, coconut milk, chili, curry leaves, onions, garlic, and aromatic spices.

Your instructor can show you how the ingredients are prepared and combined to develop the rich flavors associated with homemade Maldivian curry.

Afterward, you can sit down and enjoy the meal you helped prepare.

Make Bajiya and Other Maldivian Snacks

A cooking class may also introduce you to bajiya, one of the Maldives' popular savory snacks.

Maldivian bajiya typically consists of a pastry filled with a seasoned mixture that can include fish, coconut, onion, chili, and spices.

These small snacks are part of the wider Maldivian tradition of hedhikaa—savory and sweet snacks commonly enjoyed with tea.

Depending on the class, you might learn to prepare several types of hedhikaa, giving you a broader introduction to everyday Maldivian food culture.

Cook With Fresh Local Ingredients

One of the most enjoyable parts of a Maldivian cooking experience is working with ingredients closely associated with island cuisine.

Expect plenty of tuna, coconut, lime, chili, onion, curry leaves, and spices.

Some experiences may also include a visit to a local market or an introduction to how ingredients are selected and prepared before cooking begins.

It turns an ordinary meal into a deeper exploration of how geography, fishing traditions, and island life have influenced Maldivian cuisine.

Take a Cooking Class on a Local Island

For travelers interested in Maldivian culture, taking a class on an inhabited local island can be particularly memorable.

You get the chance to interact with local cooks, ask questions about everyday meals, and learn techniques that have often been passed between generations.

Cooking experiences may also be available through resorts, guesthouses, restaurants, and other tourism operators.

Each experience is different, so check what dishes are included before booking.

Is a Maldivian Cooking Class Good for Families?

A cooking class can be an enjoyable Maldives activity for couples, solo travelers, groups, and families.

Because many traditional recipes involve relatively straightforward preparation, beginners don't necessarily need advanced cooking skills.

Families with children should check the minimum age and whether the class involves handling knives, hot oil, or very spicy ingredients.

If you don't enjoy extremely spicy food, tell your instructor beforehand. Many dishes can be adjusted to suit your preferred level of heat.

More Than a Meal: A Cultural Experience

The best part of a Maldivian cooking class isn't simply learning a recipe.

It's the stories behind the food.

You may discover why tuna plays such an important role in Maldivian cooking, how coconut is used in different ways, when particular snacks are traditionally eaten, and how recipes vary between families and islands.

Then comes the reward: sitting down to enjoy the dishes you've prepared.

For travelers searching for authentic things to do in the Maldives beyond the beach, a local cooking class deserves a place on the itinerary.

Tips for Booking a Maldives Cooking Class

Before choosing your class, consider a few practical details:

  • Ask which Maldivian dishes you'll prepare.

  • Check whether ingredients and the final meal are included.

  • Mention allergies or dietary restrictions before booking.

  • Ask whether the class can accommodate children.

  • Choose a small-group or private experience if you prefer more hands-on instruction.

  • Look for classes taught by local cooks for a more culturally immersive experience.

  • Ask whether you'll receive recipes to recreate the dishes at home.

Best Maldivian Foods to Learn

If you have a choice of dishes, look for a class featuring traditional favorites such as mas huni, roshi, fish curry, bajiya, and other hedhikaa.

Together, they offer an excellent introduction to the ingredients and flavors that define Maldivian cooking.
