Thaa Atoll, also known as Kolhumadulu Atoll, is a beautiful and historically significant atoll in the central-southern Maldives. Known for its large turquoise lagoon, pristine islands, coral reefs, rich marine life, and traditional island communities, it offers excellent opportunities for diving, snorkeling, fishing, surfing, and peaceful tropical escapes.

Thaa Atoll, historically known as Kolhumadulu Atoll, is an administrative atoll located in the central-southern region of the Maldives. It consists of 66 islands, 13 of which are inhabited, with Veymandoo serving as the administrative capital. The atoll is connected with other parts of the Maldives through Thimarafushi Airport, making its inhabited islands and tourism destinations more accessible.
Thaa Atoll is characterized by a vast lagoon surrounded by coral reefs, tropical islands, white-sand beaches, and clear blue waters. Its marine environment provides excellent conditions for snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, and swimming, with coral reefs supporting a wide variety of tropical fish and other marine species. The relatively remote setting also gives many parts of the atoll a quiet and unspoiled atmosphere compared with the more heavily visited areas of the Maldives.

The atoll also has considerable historical and cultural importance. Archaeological discoveries on some islands have revealed ancient Buddhist remains, including the ruins of a large stupa, providing evidence of the Maldives' history before the country's conversion to Islam. The traditional name Kolhumadulu is also associated with the period of King Koimala, who is traditionally credited with bringing the Maldivian islands together under one kingdom.

Fishing has long played an important role in the livelihoods of local communities, while tourism has gradually expanded through resorts, guesthouses, water sports, diving, and other marine activities. Visitors can experience both the natural beauty of the Maldives and the everyday culture of local island communities.

With its combination of turquoise lagoons, healthy reefs, secluded beaches, traditional communities, historical sites, and abundant marine life, Thaa Atoll is an attractive destination for travelers looking to explore a quieter and less crowded side of the Maldives.
