Shaviyani Atoll

The administrative capital of Shaviyani Atoll is Funadhoo, which serves as an important center for government services, education, healthcare, transport, and commerce within the atoll. Other inhabited islands are home to close-knit communities that continue to maintain many aspects of traditional Maldivian island life.

Fishing has historically played an important role in the economy of Shaviyani Atoll, particularly tuna fishing and related activities. Local businesses, construction, retail, transport, public services, and tourism also contribute to employment and economic activity. Several islands and surrounding lagoons have tourism potential because of their beaches, reefs, dive sites, marine biodiversity, and relatively peaceful environment.

The natural environment of Shaviyani Atoll includes white-sand beaches, tropical vegetation, shallow lagoons, coral reefs, reef channels, and extensive marine habitats. The surrounding waters support a variety of tropical fish, rays, sharks, turtles, dolphins, and other marine species, making the region attractive for snorkeling, diving, fishing, and other ocean-based activities.

Shaviyani Atoll also retains a strong Maldivian cultural identity. Traditional fishing practices, local cuisine, community activities, religious traditions, boat building, and close relationships with the sea remain important parts of everyday life.
