Haa Dhaalu Atoll

The atoll is made up of numerous inhabited and uninhabited islands surrounded by turquoise lagoons, coral reefs, channels, beaches, and productive fishing grounds. Its natural environment supports fishing, tourism, marine activities, and traditional island livelihoods, while many communities continue to maintain strong connections with the sea.

Haa Dhaalu has an important role as a regional centre for northern Maldives. Kulhudhuffushi provides a range of government, education, healthcare, business, retail, and transport services for residents of the atoll and surrounding regions. Hanimaadhoo, another significant island in the atoll, is home to Hanimaadhoo International Airport and serves as an important air transport gateway to the north.

Fishing has historically been an important part of the local economy, alongside trade, construction, public services, tourism, and other growing industries. The atoll also contains islands with distinctive histories, cultural traditions, mosques, local crafts, and community lifestyles that reflect the heritage of northern Maldives.
